New Guinea Has Rare and Beautifully Haunting Creatures Called ‘Dracula Parrots’

There are some beautiful birds in the world but perhaps none with a name quite as frightening as one species found in New Guinea—the Dracula parrot. This is the nickname for the Pesquet's parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus), which is endemic to the island's hill and montane rainforest. With rich black feathers and a scarlet red underbelly, it has all the coloration of Count Dracula's cape, but looks can be deceiving.

Interview: Photographer Documents Bond Between Last Two Northern White Rhinos and Their Caretakers

American photojournalist Justin Mott is using the power of photography to shed light on important stories of animal conservation. Mott's long-term project Kindred Guardians is a look at the men and women who dedicate their lives to saving wildlife. This personal project, which is entirely self-funded, had Mott hopping on a plane to Kenya in order to document the last two northern white rhinos in existence.

Adorable Panda "Daycare" Committed to Saving the Endangered Species

Pandas, especially the babies, are some of the cutest animals on Earth. Unfortunately, their adorable population is also deeply endangered, with approximately 1,864 giant pandas left in the wild. The Chengdu Research Base in China is doing their part to help this diminishing species–they've created a specialized “daycare” that breeds, nurtures, and eventually releases the creatures back into the wild. Through this intensive program, they hope to slowly repopulate what's been lost over the years.
