Photographer Spent Final Moments Saving the Film He Shot During the 1980 Mount St. Helens Eruption

On the evening of May 17, 1980, Robert Landsburg set up camp near Mount St. Helens in southwestern Washington. The 48-year-old freelance photographer had been visiting the volcano for weeks, all in the hopes of capturing its forthcoming eruption. He wasn’t the only one enduring the trek; when seismographs detected small tremors beneath Mount St. Helens in March 1980, countless scientists, photographers, and hikers descended upon the area, preparing for a dramatic blast.

New Fundraising Initiative Raises Conservation Funds Through Wildlife Photography

It can be difficult to fully grasp the gravity of certain situations without confronting them face to face. Prints for Wildlife wants to change that, introducing people to some of the world’s most beautiful—yet most vulnerable—animals through photography. 5,000 Photos of Rural Life Taken by Vagabond Photographer Discovered Decades After Death

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a tall, imposing, and altogether unusual man would traverse the mountainous slopes of the Blenio Valley in southeastern Switzerland. During his treks through even the most remote corners of the valley, he would sing to himself all while hawking vegetable and flower seeds. Aside from his seed packets, he also carried something else: a large format plate camera.
