Mesmerizing adult coloring books by Johanna Basford invite grown-ups to pull out a box of Crayolas and return to the time-tested childhood method of unleashing creative energy. Basford, a commercial illustrator and textile designer by trade, has been recognized by her characteristic black-and-white line drawings for years.
Client requests piled up and gave rise to her series of coloring books targeted at adults. “For years, my clients have been telling me when they see my illustrations that they wanted to color them in,” she says. “So when my publishers initially approached me to do a children's coloring book, I said I'd actually like to do one for adults.”
Her first book, Secret Garden, came out in 2013, followed by the release of Enchanted Forest earlier this year. The pages, which feature floral- and animal-themed coloring pages, are both intricate and simple. As a result, they invite anyone with a pencil or crayon to begin filling in the white space.
Basford says she received such an overwhelming response from coloring “artists” that she launched a coloring gallery on her website. Here fans are invited to upload their work. “It's just amazing to see how so many people can take the same collection of images and make them so different and unique,” she says.
