It’s no secret that the news can be depressing. With seemingly endless headlines about corruption, violence, environmental disasters and more, illustrator Mauro Gatti has created a salve for these dark times. His ongoing project The Happy Broadcast shines a light on the good happening in the world. The popular Instagram account features colorful illustrations that share a positive headline and a corresponding news story in the caption.
Gatti created The Happy Broadcast as a way to deal with his “social anxiety caused by the constant stream of negative news.” Now almost two years old, the project has evolved and become a place where people engage with one another. “I think that the community around The Happy Broadcast has grown into something more than an audience that only drops a ‘like' on an image and moves on,” Gatti tells My Modern Met. “This community is engaged in constructive discussions and love to share the little moments of happiness that they encounter during their day.”
Producing encouraging artwork has been transformative for Gatti’s own mental health. “Being able to balance the fear-mongering and click-baiting headlines with some positivity and hope in the people of this world is key to a more optimistic life,” he explains. “I’m just grateful I started this little project and I look forward to its evolution. I’m currently working on an app and a book that will be released in 2020.”
