Winners of the 2024 reFocus Awards Showcase Photography’s Capacity for Empathy, Vulnerability, and Artistry

Since 2022, reFocus has aimed to celebrate the enduring appeal of photography. Their 2024 reFocus Awards showcased just that, all while spotlighting some of the world’s most visionary photographers. With entries from 77 countries, the 2024 reFocus Awards proved to be the organization’s most diverse and expansive group of entrants yet. This extraordinary range is reflected in the 2024 winners, all of whom embodied the singular spirit of the medium.

Aerial Photos Highlight Surreal Beauty of Kazakhstan’s Mangystau Plateau

Photographer Daniel Kordan always seeks out unique, unexplored regions for his photography. The surreal landscapes of Kazakhstan's Mangystau Plateau fit the bill and had been on his radar for years. Located in the southwest region of the country and bordered by Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, Mangystau's landscape is dotted with colorful canyons and mountains, dramatic salt flats, and surreal rocky outcrops.

Exceptionally Rare All-Black Penguin Caught on Camera by Wildlife Photographer

As one of the most remote destinations on Earth, South Georgia Island is best known for its rugged landscape, freezing climate, and extraordinary wildlife. Belgian photographer Yves Adams has visited the island countless times; however, during a recent expedition, he discovered something unexpected. This past November, Adams arrived at the island’s St. Andrew’s Bay when a fellow photographer pointed out a strange bird waddling across the beach.
