Amazingly Graceful Feather Sculptures

London-based artist Kate MccGwire is quite unique. She specializes in creating magnificently intricate sculptures with thousands of molted bird feathers. When asked the question, “Why feathers?” MccGwire replied, “I deliberately choose materials that possess a beauty and power when used in abundance.”

Her latest body of work includes pieces titled Guile, Lure, Quell, Seer and Yearn. Formed into shapes reminiscent of living creatures, they invite the viewer to experience a natural beauty in a most unnatural form. By presenting each twisting, flowing sculpture in a constricted space, she creates an uncomfortable tension between “our senses and our reason.” In a recent interview MccGwire said, “I want it to seem like if you look closely [they] may be breathing.”
