Create Your Own Paper Prawn With This Free Template

Paper Prawns by Lisa Lloyd

Although the coronavirus has drastically changed our day-to-day lives, artists around the globe are finding ways to spread positivity through creative projects. Among them is paper artist Lisa Lloyd—creator of incredible bird sculptures—who is offering a free tutorial on how to make her adorable paper prawns.

“Before we went into lockdown here in the UK, I was making a life-size bald eagle with a two-meter wingspan,” Lloyd explains to My Modern Met. “I knew I couldn't work on it at home and I needed to take care of the kids, so I had the idea of creating a free papercraft tutorial to help people in isolation.” Alongside the printable template, instructions, and supply list, which are all available via her website, the artist has provided a step-by-step video series on her YouTube channel. These mini lessons walk the student through all of Lloyd's processes including cutting, tracing, gluing, and applying the finishing touches.

According to Lloyd, about 1,800 people have signed up for her free prawn template so far. “There are prawns being made all over the world…India, South Africa, North America, UK, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark…I've lost track!” says the artist. Lloyd has encouraged participants to share their completed prawns on social media under the hashtag #paperprawn. In the gallery, you can see crustacean sculptures made from cereal boxes, metallic paper, sequined paper, and more.

Scroll down to see more images of handmade prawns, and remember to visit Lloyd's website to download the template and begin making your own crustacean friend.
