UK-based German artist Mariele Neudecker fuses chemistry and sculpture in her ongoing series Tank Works, which consists of three-dimensional landscapes constructed within large aquariums.
Inspired by romantic and sublime works of art, Neudecker fills glass tanks with water and miniature sculptural objects such as model ships, trees, and mountains. She then adds various chemicals to the aquariums, sparking reactions that create unique atmospheres while also forming contained climates that gradually change over time. The result is an intriguing representation of two-dimensional images recreated as dynamic, sculptural works.
