Mark Imhof is working to change the lives of countless shelter dogs–one free haircut at a time. Though he has an MBA from New York University, Imhof's fiance thought working with these dogs would be good for him. “She didn't want to see me go for another soulless job, and she saw the joy I had when I interacted with our animals,” he told The Dodo, adding that Erin O'Sullivan of Susie's Senior Dogs also inspired this choice (especially since Imhof and his partner adopted two dogs from her organization). Ultimately, Imhof decided to enroll in the American Academy of Pet Grooming.
Once Imhof and his fiance remembered just how dirty their two rescues were when they first adopted them, they realized that grooming the Animal Care Centers of NYC‘s dogs for free would make a huge difference. “Sean was my first shelter dog, and when they brought him to me, he was on the unadoptable list because of behavior issues,” Imhof recalls. “Of course, I explain to people, if we were to mat your hair, and then ask you to go do a job, you would probably have behavior issues too. So I worked through and he became the most adorable guy.”
Though Imhof now runs his own grooming, pet-sitting, and dog-walking business, he always makes time to help the ACC. The groomer concluded, “I have seen such transformations in almost all the dogs and it is so uplifting and I KNOW they will pay that love forward to their future forever homes.”
