The Women of "Star Wars" Will Teach You How to Code for Free

Nonprofit Code.org is teaming up with Lucasfilm to encourage everyone to learn how to code. During the 3rd annual Hour of Code–a quick and free online coding tutorial–students can explore the art of coding with help from popular Star Wars characters like Princess Leia, C-3PO, and R2-D2. “Millions of us have been transported to a galaxy far, far away thanks to the creativity of the team behind Star Wars,” Code.

Specially Designed Pencils Can Be Recycled to Become a Blooming Garden

When you wear a pencil down to a stub, what do you do with it? More often than not, these worn-out writing utensils end up in the trash, which winds up becoming a significant amount of waste. Around 15 billion pencils are made each year and in an effort to limit the waste created from them, three MIT students created a multifunctional alternative called Sprout Pencil.

Poland’s Mysterious “Crooked Forest” Populated with 400 Bent Pine Trees

Located just outside of Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, Poland, there lies a pine grove known as the “Crooked Forest.” It is one of the most unusual forests in Central Europe. What makes this grove of approximately 400 trees so bizarre is that instead of growing naturally, each tree is bent at 90 degrees near the base, causing a wide arc to the top. Stranger still, all stems are bent in the same direction: due North.
