Scientists Had a #CuteOff Competition on Twitter to Crown the Cutest Animal on Earth

Is there anything better than pictures of adorable animals? The creature-loving scientists, zoos, and aquariums on Twitter definitely don't think so. This week, a variety of animal experts and organizations decided to demonstrate just how passionate they are about the other species that call Earth home–the super cute ones, in particular. In a social media battle known as the #CuteOff, animal lovers everywhere shared photos of the most adorable critters for this fun competition.

New Amazingly Intricate, Laser-Cut Wood Relief Silhouettes by Gabriel Schama

Oakland, CA-based artist Gabriel Schama layers thin sheets of laser-cut wood to create amazingly intricate wood relief sculptures made up of dizzying patterns and textures. While known for his geometric, mandala-like compositions, several of the artist's most recent works fill elegant silhouettes with precisely cut designs, creating elaborate portraits that fuse figurative and abstract motifs. “These recent silhouette pieces are not a new thread in my work,” Schama told us via email.

Journalist Spends Four Years Documenting India’s Crumbling Subterranean Stepwells Before They Disappear

Tucked away on quiet streets far from the hustle and bustle of popular tourist attractions, in between the spectacular palaces, temples, and tombs that appear on the covers of guidebooks, an entire category of Indian architecture has faded into obscurity and historical obsolescence. Called stepwells, these centuries-old structures consist of deep wells that can be accessed via staircases plunging several stories underground.
