This animated video helps break down animal gaits for animators, artists, or any old fan of studying creatures,” Cunnane writes.

Photographer Captures the Diverse Beauty of New England Caterpillars

With more than 120,000 known species around the world, the beauty and variety of caterpillars is astounding. New Englander Samuel Jaffe has taken his lifelong love of caterpillars to a new level, dedicating the last several years to researching, photographing, and educating the public about these intriguing creatures. In 2008, Jaffe took up the rearing of caterpillars he'd enjoyed as a child, and documented his work with incredible photographs of the caterpillars of New England.

Japanese Illustrator Creates Beautiful Handbook of the Birds You’ll Find in Tokyo

Commissioned by Tokyo Midtown—an art and design-focused urban district in the heart of Japan’s capital city—illustrator Ryo Takemasa created an illustrated “handbook” of Tokyo’s most common Japanese birds. Made in collaboration with graphic design studio Tawarasha, the pamphlet features 25 different bird species rendered in Takemasa’s distinct minimalist style. From the common pigeon to the majestic great egret, each bird is beautifully illustrated with simple, graphic shapes and muted colors.
