Vibrant Swirling Landscapes Look Like They’re Painted by a Modern-Day Van Gogh

Pastel Art by James R. Eads

Los Angeles-based artist James R. Eads modernizes Impressionism with his surreal, nature-inspired works. Rendered in pastel and gouache on wood panels, the talented artist plays with color and motion to create dreamlike worlds comprised of expressive textured marks in vivid hues.

Ead’s impressive portfolio of work is reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh’s impasto technique, which is most prominent in the celestial swirling sky in his iconic painting, Starry Night. Like the iconic Dutch painter, Eads uses quick marks to capture the ephemeral, fleeting moments in time. Colors seem to dance around the canvas, perfectly capturing the glimmering sun and moonlight that emit magical glows on many of the artist’s colorful fields and rivers.

Looking through Eads’ ever-growing portfolio is like flicking through a storybook—each whimsical scene transports the viewer into an imaginary landscape. “Like a map to a new world, his pieces act as illustrations for something unknown,” his artist statement reads. “This feeling of discovery is sometimes lost in adulthood—the world is seen more clearly and the exciting feeling of wonderment begins to dissipate. James holds on to wonderment and scatters it throughout his work in an attempt to remind those who have forgotten about the excitement in the world.”
