Italian photographer Aidan Sartin Conte creates surreal photo mashups that blend human faces with cityscapes. In both his series, Where Is My Mind and Chrononauts Stories, Conte explores the gray matter of the brain—the place where humans create memories, imagination, and dreams.
In Where Is My Mind, human faces are obscured by architectural landscapes and busy streets, visualizing how journeys not only open our minds, but also shape who we become. In Chrononauts Stories, Conte’s portraits are once again merged with photos of cityscapes, but this time they’re the city streets of the 19th century. This series explores the astonishing achievements of mankind over the centuries and how our own history also has the power to influence future generations.
Despite using digital tools to render his work, all of Conte’s projects begin with a pencil and paper. “Sketches and notes turn into thoughts and images,” he explains. “I sleep with my Moleskine and a pencil because most of my ideas come to me at night. I wake up and I write down what I have imagined or dreamed, to be sure to remember everything next morning.”
