A team of architects and designers have come together to explore how 3D printing technology can help our flying friends. Printednest aims to bring birds back into cities with its 3D-printed bird feeders. As 3D Print states, “Designed to adhere to the smooth, exterior surfaces of urban structures from apartment buildings to office buildings, these 8″ tall objects are the result of an ambitious urban revival program. At the heart of the program is a concern for dwindling bird populations in urban areas, no doubt due to a range of causes from air pollution to the lack of available physical supports and material for nests.”
The main body consists of an egg shaped container while deer antler-shaped stems protrude out of it, acting as a perch. The bird feeder can be attached to a building or home window using 2-sided adhesive dual lock tape. The project is open source, which means users can download the designs and 3D print them for free. Or, if you prefer, you can buy a nest on the Printednest website for about $50.
So far, there are 87 bird nests in 65 cities across 20 countries around the world. By registering your bird feeder, you can gain access to a world map that shows you where others are located. You can find a gallery of these 3D-printed nests on Pinterest. Love the bright colors!
