Finished works of art can be daunting examples for aspiring young artists to replicate or aspire to create themselves. Fortunately, there are creatives like Taji Joseph who impart insightful knowledge about drawing in the form of educational tutorials. The Minneapolis-based artist creates a variety of artistic guides, ranging from drawing facial features to different shading techniques. Joseph began making Instagram posts of his sketchbook tutorials to help students that needed help finding their footing in making art.
“Apart from learning about subject matter, I thought it would be useful for emerging artists to learn about the shading process,” the artist explained to My Modern Met. “Early into my studies, I had no idea what drawing terms such as 2B, 3H, chiaroscuro, or negative space really meant.” So, Joseph began imparting his knowledge in the form of short drawing tutorials via social media. Each guide offers clear and digestible advice in different areas of art. While some explain the basics of drawing an eye, others involve more advanced tips on anatomy and sketching the human body.
One of Joseph's favorite aspects of creating educational content is connecting with the online creative community. Since his drawing guides are accessible to anyone with social media, the artist can engage with thousands of viewers, whilst also learning from other artist tutors. “What started as simple tutorials/tips ended up helping others learn more about the art world and its endless possibilities,” Joseph says.
