WEEKEND EXPERIENCE – ART+CULTURE: Nature From Another Perspective

Opening Reception: Friday, October 23rd, 7pm-10pm @ David B. Smith Gallery

For this weekend's art+culture pick we head over to the city of Denver, Colorado. Using all kinds of cool mediums, Gregory Euclide explores the way we experience nature in art. “When we are in nature we experience the world through all of our senses in a dynamic way, but at the same time we are framing what we see through the cultural expectations we have absorbed through representational systems such as landscape painting, wildlife documentary, and travel guides,” Euclide states. “It is impossible, then, to have a true, non-mediated experience of nature even though we may long for it. My work explores the contradictions between the projection of idealized, picturesque views of landscape and our desire to have an authentic experience in nature.” Gregory Euclide is a teacher living in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. You can catch some of his new works at the David B. Smith Gallery through November 14th, 2009.
