Artist Robin Wight, aka FantasyWire, uses design problem solving to create his fanciful collection of wire sculpture art. With a career in manufacturing, resolving practical issues is his forte, but the lyrical representation of fairies expresses his true artistic soul. “I try to apply design criteria,” he explains, “including a story, movement, some visual illusion, emotion and natural forces.” The results are enchanting pieces that add a playful touch to outdoor landscapes.
The U.K.-based artist wants to move past traditional depictions of fairies, and he does so through dynamic bodies composed of multi-gauge wire. Wrapped around slender-yet-strong limbs, they are dynamic. With each piece, Wight captures his characters in the midst of exaggerated motion. The focus on form is part of the artist's quest to “avoid the clichés and hopefully deliver a balance of the traditional childlike whimsicality with the aesthetic of a female form wrapped around an action type persona.”
Wight first had the idea to create wire art sculpture in 2010, while mending a fence. “I was twisting an old piece of wire up to throw away,” he recalls,“when it occurred to me that fence wire was a good material to model with…It’s sort of like metal clay.”
For those also interested in working with this material, Wight has put together helpful DIY Starter Kits that have everything you need to start making your own fairy sculptures.
