Woman Asks Other Women Why They Don’t Get Manicures, Gets Inspiring Replies From Queens at Work

You can tell a lot about a person by their hands—and sometimes you can tell even more by their nails. The length of the nails can evoke femininity or masculinity and the color of the polish, whether it’s a fresh coat of nude nail polish or a matte black—may signal something different altogether. Given that many find a lot of comfort in getting their nails done, Threads user Jenny Nuel asked, “Girls that don't get manicures and pedicures…. Why???” The responses to her query have been nothing short of top tier.

While many cited comfort or costs, she inadvertently opened up a conversation about thriving women whose paths don’t pair well with a manicure. For starters, a long pair of polished nails can also be an obstacle to one’s passions and personal projects. Piano players would struggle to hit the keys with long nails, climbers need the best grip possible when going up on rocky formations, gardeners literally get their hands dirty by carrying out daily chores, and even divers wouldn’t be able to put their wetsuits on easily. But there’s actually much more to it.

Sharing an image from a flight deck, pilot Amy P. Fuller replied, “I press buttons for a living, Jenny. Not ideal.” Conservationist Silvia Caputo said she can’t either, as she is a cultural heritage conservator, and posted a picture of her using a brush with striking precision. Logan Ann Hanson posed proudly in her chef’s whites, saying that it goes against food safety laws. And comically, nail technician Jackie Diem says that she can’t get a manicure, as she is too busy doing other people’s nails.

According to Indeed Hiring Lab, women now make up more than half of the U.S. workforce. The gap between male and female labor force participation has hit a record low, and continues to shrink. If anything, this array of professionals at work across this many fields is a cheerful testament to this.

There wasn’t bad blood with those who enjoy their stylish nails; if anything, it speaks highly of each person’s professionalism and ambition. One commenter (lexinthecitynyc) wrote, “Me, with my long nails, liking every comment from women explaining their cool job or hobby that makes them anti–long nails.” As for the nail lover who started the conversation, she was excited to hear about all the responses she got. “I am screaming I love and I am so proud of all the exceptional and amazing women who dropped a comment under this thread!” Nuel said. “Won’t say much, but let’s keep making the world know we phenomenal!”
