Exploring wintry landscapes alongside a bunch of cheerful dogs sounds like a dream, right? While it certainly is in most cases, things can also go sideways—quite literally. During a competition of the Norway Trail, an international mid-distance sled dog race, a woman’s sled accidentally toppled over. Despite this mishap, the dogs didn’t stop racing. Their blind determination would up dragging her across the snow for a few minutes. Luckily, a fellow competitor named Markéta Bednar selflessly rescued her, saving her from imminent danger.
The hair-rising moment was all captured by a camera attached to Bednar’s suit, providing a hero’s POV of the rescue. The clip was later shared by Norway Trail on social media, commending the racer’s heroism.
“Today brought one of those moments that reminds you why dog sledding is pure magic,” they wrote. “During the race, one musher had a nasty accident—the sled tipped, and they were dragged along at full speed. Before anyone even had time to react, Markéta Bednar came charging past, threw herself into the runaway team, and brought the whole situation under control.”
Understandably, many wonder why the woman didn’t let go of the dogs to avoid being dragged. Beito Husky Tours, provider of dog sledding in Norway, says the first of the 10 commandments of dog sledding is to never let go of the sled. “Whatever happens, hold on to your sled for your own safety and your passenger’s.” Additionally, if the human lets go of their dogs, they can become stranded without their gear, and the dogs can get tangled, lost, and injured. So, sticking together is key.
By jumping onto the other sled, Bednar broke the dog’s momentum by simply increasing the weight of the load they were carrying, throwing them off. Norway Trail describes Bednar’s reaction as an act of pure instinct, courage, and skill. In fact, they say, “Honestly, after seeing that save, I’m convinced Markéta could get a job as a goalkeeper for any football club.”
