Large-Scale Paintings of Wide-Eyed Women Explore the Tension Between Inner and Outer Worlds [Interview]

Three women stare directly at the viewer from within a wild, tangled landscape. Their bodies fold and intertwine across Trying to Transcend in the Midst of Everything, a monumental triptych by Tania Marmolejo. Created for ELIGERE Gallery’s presentation at Kiaf SEOUL 2026, the work responds to two gilt-bronze Pensive Bodhisattvas at the National Museum of Korea. Marmolejo was drawn to their quiet gestures and inward expressions, which convey a movement from human anguish toward enlightenment.

Bird’s-Eye View Paintings Are Powerful Portraits of Landscapes Grappling With Climate Change [Interview]

Artist Leslie Wayne turns aerial views of coastlines, waterways, and ice into large-scale paintings that examine a changing planet. Her exhibition The Unintended Blues is on view at the Arts Center at Governors Island in New York through September 27, 2026, as part of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s River to River Festival. The series began in 2024 on a flight along the East Coast.
