Sometimes, nature reveals its immense power in an instant. On July 25, a colossal iceberg flipped over just off the coast of Ilulissat, Greenland, sending waves rippling toward shore in a dramatic display that was captured on camera. Filmed from the town and by a high-definition livestream operated by AfarTV, the moment has since gone viral, offering a rare glimpse at the immense forces constantly reshaping Greenland’s icy landscape.
The towering iceberg was positioned near the entrance to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for producing some of the Northern Hemisphere’s largest icebergs. According to AfarTV, large icebergs can remain grounded or trapped near the mouth of the fjord for months or even years as they slowly melt and fracture. As their weight shifts, they can suddenly roll over—a process known as capsizing—creating powerful waves as a newly buoyant side rises above the water.
While the exact moment this iceberg broke away from the glacier remains unknown, its dramatic flip serves as a reminder of the enormous scale of Greenland’s ice sheet. Covering roughly 80% of the island, it spans more than 650,000 square miles, making it one of only two permanent ice sheets on Earth, alongside Antarctica.
Scientists have observed that Greenland’s ice sheet is shrinking at an accelerating pace as global temperatures rise. On average, it loses around 261 gigatonnes of ice each year—equivalent to roughly 2.2 trillion pounds per gigatonne. As the ice melts and flows into the ocean, it contributes to rising sea levels that affect coastlines around the world.
Although iceberg rollovers are a natural part of a glacier’s lifecycle, the sheer size of Greenland’s icebergs underscores the scale of the changes taking place across the Arctic. Videos like this offer a striking reminder that landscapes often perceived as distant and frozen are constantly moving, reshaped by gravity, melting ice, and a changing climate.
