The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has changed its recommendation on wearing face masks during the coronavirus pandemic. At first, they advised only those who had symptoms of COVID-19 (such as sneezing or coughing) to wear a face mask when outside of their home in order to prevent infecting others. But after learning more about the virus and how it spreads, the CDC is now recommending that everyone wear a face mask in public. This is especially important in places where six feet of social distancing is hard to maintain—like the grocery store or the pharmacy.
The CDC urges everyday people to wear cloth face masks and reserve the surgical masks and N95 respirators for healthcare workers and other first responders. Knowing this gives you a couple of options: you can make your own mask (it’s easier than you think) or you can buy a cloth covering from an independent seller. Etsy has encouraged its sellers, if they can, to add masks to their store—and many have done so.
With so many shops making cloth masks, there are a lot of opportunities to express yourself when you wear one. Pick your favorite color or a pattern that brings you joy—just make sure you buy the right size. And according to experts, you should treat masks like underwear and launder them (including machine dry) after every use. If you anticipate leaving your home multiple times a week, it might be wise to buy at least a couple of masks.
