This two-legged chair appears a bit unstable to sit in but that was the intention of product designer Benoit Malta. The sleek, modern concept, entitled Inactivit, is meant to provide support while still engaging the body in some physical activity. While sitting in the wooden chair, users are forced to slightly engage their legs and core in order to maintain a balanced seat.
This active stimulation results in a constant awareness of the body which Malta describes as “bearable discomfort.” Users can create a slight rock as they continuosly stabilize themselves in the seat. When not in use, the piece must rest against a wall so that it doesn't topple over. Malta explains, “Through my design process I try to ask myself about our ways of living and our ways of consuming and I would like to look for a way to give meanings to all kind of objects.”
