As part of Vivid Sydney 2013, Designworks worked with The Benevolent Society to create an amazing interactive light installation that consists of thousands of tiny LED lights. Called Hundreds and Thousands, it's a walk-through tunnel where the lights are controlled individually, responding to on-the-ground visitors who interact with them, or by Australians who share their hopes via tweet.
Benevolent Society, Australia's first charity, is a not-for-profit and non-religious organization that helps people change their lives through support and education. In this installation, they asked people to share, in 140 characters or less, what positive change they hope for in the next 200 years. The installation responds when people share their hopes for the future via Twitter when they add the hashtag #hopesforchange or through their website.
You can take a moment and check out all the “hopes” on Benevolent's website. There are ones like, “I hope that all children will live free from abuse and violence” and “I hope for all children to be loved.”
The greater the number of people sharing their hopes, the more dynamic the lighting effects become. Said Anne Hollonds, CEO of The Benevolent Society, “Hundreds and Thousands is so much more than a light installation, it's a wonderful platform to engage with Australians of all walks of life and share a little bit of our history, what we stand for today and our vision for the future.
