Humans are not the only ones affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles—thousands of animals, both wild and domestic, have been devastated as well. Many pets have become separated from their families or need a place to stay while their humans get back on their feet. To help free space in local shelters around the LA area, organizations around the country are taking in adoptable animals from Southern California.

Virginia Zoo Announces Adorable Name of Their New Baby Pygmy Hippo Following a Worldwide Poll

Last year, Moo Deng the baby pygmy hippo from Thailand rose to stardom for her cute yet quirky looks. Now, there's a new cutie in the neighborhood, and she's just as adorable. Metro Richmond Zoo in Richmond, Virginia, recently welcomed a baby pygmy hippopotamus, and asked the public to help them name her. After a worldwide voting campaign, the tiny creature is now known as Poppy.

Humpback Whale Breaks Migration Record and Baffles Scientists by Making 8,000-Mile Journey

Humpback whales are known, among other things, for their lengthy migrations. Much to the surprise of a group of researchers, though, one of these creatures seems to have broken a record. After being spotted in the Pacific Ocean off Colombia in 2017, a male whale popped up near Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean in 2022, making it one of the longest and most unusual whale migrations ever recorded for an individual whale.
