Hong Kong-based artist Johnson Tsang reflects on violence and compassion in his stunningly surreal, ceramic sculpture Conversion. In his signature style, Tsang molded clay into human body parts that trickle and flow with liquid. With a delicate balance that seems to defy physics, the sculpture consists of a pair of ceramic hands that hold a melting revolver, whose drips run down to form the melting, disintegrating visage of a serene figure. The golden face, her eyes closed in Buddha-like meditation, brings to mind images of Guanyin, a goddess associated with mercy and compassion in many East Asian cultures.
According to the artist, “Although killing takes place every day, we know that somewhere in this world, there are people who are extending a helping hand to others, working hard to save lives. I believe that violence, hatred, arrogance and fear will finally be converted into the positive energy of love, peace, eternity and compassion. The evil spirit will be enlightened and the world's fate will then be totally changed. This work is dedicated to those who strive for peace.”
