Los Angeles-based artist Mike Mitchell, best known for his Just Like Us series, has taken a departure from his usual, comically light-hearted illustrations and created an awesome new collection of pop culture portraits. The series of “thirty-ish portraits” feature the profiles of characters from beloved films, including cult favorites like Mr. Pink from Resevoir Dogs (in pink) and Veronica from Heathers (post-explosion and donning Heather's red scrunchie).
Mitchell explains the reasons behind his character choices: “Naturally there's a few crowd pleasers, but I tried to pick characters that are more under appreciated in pop culture art. It's important to me that this show feels fresh and unique, and I think my choices are helping to achieve that. The movies I chose from span all genres, but the unifying theme are characters that made a strong impression on me, regardless of their screen time. There are a few characters that aren't even in their respected movies for more than 5 minutes, but they are a big reason I watch those movies.”
Opening reception for Mitchell's show is tonight at Mondo Gallery in Austin, Texas. The portraits will be on display through May 26, 2013.
