Artist Suzuki Yasuo etches fine lines and careful crosshatching into circular cuts of wood to create his intricate and ethereal engravings. His pieces feature natural creatures like owls and butterflies surrounded by organic plant forms, from seaweed to mushrooms. Other works portray profiles of women’s faces, their hair interwoven with insect wings or flowers, and their eyes often gently shut as if drifting into their very own dreamland.
The deep tones of the woodcuts—some nearly black, others a rich red and amber—lend a dark and enigmatic aura to the art. Each image seems surreal and otherworldly, and yet rooted in the natural world, both in subject and material. You can see many more engravings on Yasuo's Instagram page.
