Glamorous Celebrity Portraits Captured at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2020

The Academy Awards is about celebrating achievements in film, but watch the ceremony and you’ll see that it’s also about celebrity sightings and fantastic fashion. Photographer Mark Seliger and Vanity Fair are commemorating the A-list attendees (and their fabulous frocks) through striking portraiture. As in previous years, they set up an Oscar Portrait Studio at the magazine’s famous after-party and shared a selection of the images on their website and Instagram.

The Portrait Studio is reinvented with each new awards season. For 2020, the set recalled a moody, sparsely decorated apartment in an old warehouse. Equipped with a rotary phone, a cast-iron radiator, a small library, and a loveseat, the scene looked as though it was plucked from another era. Some stars, like Tracee Ellis Ross, chose to take advantage of the entire space. In her photo, she leans back against the arm of the couch and wistfully stares out the clouded windows.

Other celebrities favored a cropped portrait that highlighted the light streaming in from the outside. Robert De Niro, for instance, looks towards the window in a reflective moment. Seliger chose to focus on the actor’s expression and exclude the rest of the set. This emotional photograph, as with the rest of Seliger’s work that night, stands in stark contrast to what was certainly a roaring party nearby.
