When mom-to-be Tatiana Guerra went in for a routine ultrasound, she was not able to see her unborn child named Murilo. At the age of 17-years-old, Tatiana lost her sight completely, causing her to rely solely on her other senses. During the ultrasound, the doctor asked, “If you could touch him, would that let you know what he's like?” When the pregnant woman happily responded “Yes,” she was presented with something wonderful.
Thanks to 3D printing, technicians were able to create a lifelike bust of Murilo while the ultrasound was being performed. Once the 3D image was completed, the excited woman was handed the detailed sculpture wrapped in a white blanket. “That's an image of your son. See if he feels the way you think he does,” said the doctor. After unwrapping the cloth, Tatiana ran her fingers across the words “I am your son,” which were written in braille at the top. She then carefully touched her son's face, smiling as she was able to “see” her son just like other mothers. Overcome with emotion, Tatiana stated, “I'm very happy to meet Murilo before he's born.”
Other blind mothers are going to be given the same heartwarming chance as Tatiana, thanks to revolutionary 3D printing and a campaign started by Huggies Brasil.
