Mysterious figures slowly emerge from clouds of white smoke in Alex Wein's series, entitled Sirens. The Oakland-based artist produced this series of work in what he describes as an ongoing exploration of “fiction and the uncanny realism that it inspires.” In each composition, Wein encourages viewers to spend a few moments deciphering the lines, shapes, and movements of the faceless figures.
Just like the Greek mythological creatures who lured sailors in with their enchanting songs, Wein's modern day sirens lure viewers in with their mysterious, captivating presence. What we can see of the poses suggest that the figures are on an exploration through the mist, in search of some sort of clarity. Each image has an emotional draw, intriguing viewers with the indescribable narrative that hides behind the smokey veil.
