A French artist known as RAST makes groundbreaking art that will also leave many wondering, “Why hasn't this been done before?” The installation artist produces something he calls “mechanical paintings.” These begin as large-scale murals, boasting a lifelike style yet fanciful compositions with tons of details. However, the true magic happens when the characters come alive with the help of some well placed electric motors.

The artist's website describes his style as “instantly recognizable, characterized by a blend of detailed realism and very dense texture with bright, cheerful colors. Artiste RAST’s work is distinguished by the intense humanity it conveys.” His latest work, titled Victoria, is a perfect showcase of all of these qualities.

The striking piece is a monumental 32 x 10 feet in size and it took 25 weeks to complete with the help of his partner and a friend. The composition presents a larger-than-life redheaded woman with a crown of roses and gears. On her hand, she holds planet Earth, seemingly at war with itself as the natural world is endangered by global warming and human behavior.

As if the painting wasn't astonishing and eye-catching on its own, the composition comes alive with the help of 36 motors—a new record for RAST—and solar panels, which the artist describes as a “combination of technology and renewable energy.” This system adds layers to the original creation, as they allow for the main character to move her eyes and blink, while simultaneously rotating the gear and flowers on her head, a well as the planet she holds.
