Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Japan’s Heated Tables with Built-In Blankets Now Also Have Storage Spaces

For small spaces, multifunctional furniture is an ingenious way to save valuable square footage. A prime example of this is a Japanese table called kotatsu. This ultra-cozy product is simultaneously a storage bin, eating surface, and heating source all rolled into one. Kotatsu has a long tradition in Japanese culture. It has been around since the 14th century, and it evolved from a cooking hearth to what we see today.

Foodie Matches Anything Edible with Its Perfect Pantone Swatch

Food and design go together more often than we think. Lucy Litman shows us how both literal and delicious this can be with her #pantoneposts project. The premise is simple yet visually striking—and it’ll probably make you hungry. Using Pantone swatches, Litman matches the colorful squares with foods of the same hue. Like many creative endeavors, Litman began #pantoneposts as a side project.

Unique “Cliff House” Offers Unforgettable Experience Perched Over a Winding River

If you're looking for a thrilling vacation escape, the conceptual cabin design called Maralah is just the place. Conceived of as a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright and John Lautner, LAAV Architects created the unique 484-square-foot abode with plans to submerge it in the ground and overlook a cliff in Calgary, Canada. This project is similar to one of their earlier plans, the Casa Brutale, which we marveled over in 2015.
