Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Six Industrial Silos Transformed Into Vibrant Murals by Os Gemeos

Soon, in the city of Vancouver, street artists Os Gemeos will unveil a new mural that livens up a typically gray industrial area in Granville Island. The identical twin brothers from Brazil painted six large silos in their distinctive cartoonish style with vibrant colors and patterns that adorn the structures. Each 75-foot-tall cylinder features a different character, who comes complete with their own personality, wardrobe, and bright yellow skin.

Funny Ultrasound Photo Shows Shows Baby Giving a Thumbs Up

Reddit user meancloth recently saw the image of his wife's latest ultrasound, which would no doubt be a touching sight for any parent-to-be. But, one small thing made it even better. Their baby boy was giving a thumbs up! You can clearly see in the hilarious photo that he's saying that he “approves” of the ultrasound. Since meancloth posted the picture on Reddit a mere few days ago, it's gotten a massive 2.25 million views.

Photos Highlight How Different 200 Calories Looks in Certain Foods

What does 200 calories worth of food look like? The website Wisegeek conducted a study of 71 different edibles to find out. They proportioned things like peanut butter, canned beans, fruits, veggies, and even soda into 200 calorie quantities and photographed the results. It's surprising to see what this actually looks like when on a plate. Some foods, like candy, are high in calories compared to their size.

Stylist Spends Every Sunday Giving Haircuts to the Homeless

Every Sunday, hair stylist Mark Bustos ventures through New York City in search of his next client. Although he works at an upscale salon, he's actually looking for someone less fortunate who'd appreciate a haircut. He approaches these people and opens with the same simple phrase: “I want to do something nice for you today.” Bustos began cutting hair for the homeless in May 2012 after a visit to family members in the Philippines.
