Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

5 Million More People Watched Rihanna’s Super Bowl Half Time Show Than the Game Itself

Super Bowl LVII saw a Kansas City Chiefs victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in an exciting matchup with the final score of 38 to 35, respectively. But many folks watching couldn’t care less about the two teams. For them, the event was all about the halftime show to see Rihanna—and she did not disappoint. Rihanna's performance brought in 118.7 million viewers for her Super Bowl Halftime Show, according to preliminary numbers.

Cosplayer Hits the Gym To Become Strong Like the Mortal Kombat Character She Portrays

Cosplay is an art. People go to great lengths to look like their favorite characters, and when done well, the results are amazing. (But even when they're “bad,” they can be so good.) One cosplayer named Rena recently recreated the Mortal Kombat character Kitana, donning the fighter's bright blue outfit that includes matching arm cuffs and a couple of 3D-printed bladed fans held in either hand.

Mind-Bending Geometric Art Creates Flowing Forms From Folded Paper and Plywood Pieces

Artist and architect Anna Kruhelska creates mind-bending art using geometry. Her repeating designs feature three-dimensional pyramids and circular shapes that produce undulating forms and tactile tessellations. Crafted from either folded paper or specially cut plywood, each piece highlights how math and art go hand in hand. Together, the two forces help create flowing shapes brought to life through light, shadow, and the strategic use of color.

Beyoncé Now Has the Most Grammys Ever After Winning Her 32nd Award

Beyoncé made history at the 2023 Grammy Awards. Receiving her fourth trophy at this year's ceremony brought her total number of Grammy wins to 32—breaking the record for the most wins by any artist. The historic moment came as she was awarded the best dance/electronic music album for Renaissance, her tribute to Black and queer dance music. She became the first Black woman to win in the category since its inception in 2005.
