Jessica Stewart

Jessica Stewart is a Staff Editor and Digital Media Specialist for My Modern Met, as well as a curator and art historian. Since 2020, she is also one of the co-hosts of the My Modern Met Top Artist Podcast. She earned her MA in Renaissance Studies from University College London and now lives in Rome, Italy. She cultivated expertise in street art which led to the purchase of her photographic archive by the Treccani Italian Encyclopedia in 2014. When she’s not spending time with her three dogs, she also manages the studio of a successful street artist. In 2013, she authored the book "Street Art Stories Roma" and most recently contributed to "Crossroads: A Glimpse Into the Life of Alice Pasquini." Smithsonian Magazine Announces Winners of Its 19th Annual Photo Contest

A look at how we stayed connected during the pandemic took home the top prize at the 19th annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest. Sinsee Ho's timely photo beat out the 59 other finalist images, which were culled from over 47,000 entries. Aside from the grand prize, winners were named in six categories, as well as a Readers' Choice award. Ho's winning image was taken in Malaysia during the 2021 Chinese Lunar New Year.

Exhibition Highlights Excellence in Global Female Street Photography

Since 2017, Women Street Photographers (WSP) has been spotlighting the rich contribution of female photographers to the genre. What started as an Instagram account has transformed into a book, artist residency, film series, and traveling exhibition. Among the programming by WSP is their annual exhibition highlighting great street photography by women. This year's exhibition opens on April 8, 2022 at Artspace PS109 in New York City.

African Flamingo Spotted in Texas 17 Years After Escaping Kansas Zoo

In a twist that sounds like a Disney movie come to life, an African flamingo that escaped from a Kansas zoo 17 years ago is still living its best life out in the wild. Last spotted in 2019, the flamingo—known as No. 492 for the number on its leg band—recently made an appearance again. A local fisherman and wildlife guide reported the sighting on the coast of Texas.

Photographer Uses 2 Million Photos to Produce GIF Showing Moon’s Movement

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy spent a month chasing the Moon in order to create a gif that shows the beauty of its movement. Using over 2 million individual photos, he put together a spectacular look at how it “dances in the sky.” This dance is called libration and it's the result of the Moon's slightly tilted axis and elliptical orbit around Earth.
