Smithsonian Takes a Look at the World’s Most Interesting Insects

Representing 80% of all animal species, insects are some of the most abundant animals on Earth. And yet, there is so much that your average person doesn't know about these fascinating creatures. Thankfully, Smithsonian has taken it upon itself to highlight some of the most fascinating examples of these colorful animals with the Smithsonian Handbook of Interesting Insects. Each insect was selected from the 34 million specimens located in London's Natural History Museum.

This Punk Rock Turtle With Green “Hair” Is Facing Extinction in Australia

Tucked away in the waters of Australia's Mary River in Queensland there is a unique species of freshwater turtle—the Mary River turtle. This special specimen diverged from other species 40 million years ago. For such an ancient turtle, funnily enough, they were only properly described by scientists 25 years ago. These endangered animals are distinct in many ways, but perhaps attract the most attention for their punk hairdo.

This Moth Has Brilliant Wing Patterns That Look Like Tiger Eyes

On one of David Weiller's many expeditions to the rainforest, he was drawn like a moth to a flame to a slumbering Brahmaea Hearseyi moth occupying a nearby tree trunk. “This was a lucky find as it was attracted at night to the light of my bungalow,” says the wildlife photographer. What makes this moth so different from any other? Well, it's wings look like a pair of tiger eyes.
