Smithsonian Magazine Announces Winners of Its 19th Annual Photo Contest

A look at how we stayed connected during the pandemic took home the top prize at the 19th annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest. Sinsee Ho's timely photo beat out the 59 other finalist images, which were culled from over 47,000 entries. Aside from the grand prize, winners were named in six categories, as well as a Readers' Choice award. Ho's winning image was taken in Malaysia during the 2021 Chinese Lunar New Year.

Exhibition Highlights Excellence in Global Female Street Photography

Since 2017, Women Street Photographers (WSP) has been spotlighting the rich contribution of female photographers to the genre. What started as an Instagram account has transformed into a book, artist residency, film series, and traveling exhibition. Among the programming by WSP is their annual exhibition highlighting great street photography by women. This year's exhibition opens on April 8, 2022 at Artspace PS109 in New York City.

Photographer Explores the Beauty and Decay of Abandoned Churches in Italy

The history of Italy, home to the Vatican, is historically tied to the Catholic church. So it comes as no surprise that there are an estimated 65,000 churches—or chiese—in Italy. But what may surprise you are the vast quantities of churches that have been abandoned and left to decay. Across the country, it's an all-too-common phenomenon and it's something that Dutch photographer Roman Robroek wanted to learn more about.

Inspiring Photo Captures Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Daughter Looking at Her With Pride

On March 21, 2022, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson made her opening statement—and history. Jackson is the first Black woman to be nominated to serve as a Supreme Court justice, making her opening statement to the Senate, and the subsequent four days of hearings, historic events. The hearings themselves are essentially an interview, designed to be a time where senators ask incisive questions to gauge the nominee's fitness for the life-tenured position of Supreme Court justice.
