Dog owners often say that their canine companions are like their children. Our fluffy family members might be a different species, but we’re still able to connect with them on an emotional level—sometimes even more so than with other human beings. Despite not being able to interact verbally, dogs can often seem as though they’re communicating by mimicking human facial expressions. This is the inspiration behind the adorable, on-going photo series, titled Dogs Are The Best People, by husband and wife pet photography team Belinda Richards and Tony Ladson (of Frog Dog Studios).
Richards and Ladson tell My Modern Met that they spend their days “speaking fluent dog.” They’ve spent the last two and a half years photographing over 500 dogs, cats, bunnies, and even ferrets in their Melbourne-based studio. The creative duo makes sounds and offers treats (like peanut butter) to each four-legged subject, in order to capture their true character on camera. “One thing I noticed is how each animal gives me such relatable expressions,” says Richards. “Their reactions to the different noises I make or words I use is so unique to each individual, just like people.”
