San Francisco-based artist Amy Sol visualizes dreamlike worlds and mythical characters that have been frozen in time. Her ethereal oil paintings and figurative sculptures merge nature and femininity, giving a glimpse into the lives and daily rituals of the artist’s fairytale characters and their spirit animal companions.
To create her work, Sol blends traditional oil painting and sculpting techniques with modern 3D printing and virtual reality. Creating her own visual language, the talented artist explores light, atmosphere, and dimension. Sol’s elegant and serene figures are seen both in her gray-toned oil paintings and mixed-media sculptural works, allowing them to live in the third dimension, outside of the canvas.
In Sol’s paintings, mythical deer heads, a ghost-like wolf, and magical birds float next to solemn characters, acting as protective comrades. In the artist’s resin and steel sculptures, similar female figures are depicted, rendered in the same soft, gray hues in her paintings. Lighter tones are seen at the top of each head, highlighting their flowing hair and soft facial features. Each sculptural piece is often subtly lit from above, mirroring the soft golden light seen in the background of many of the artist’s paintings.
Sol will display her latest works in an exhibition titled Lore. This is her first solo show at Spoke Art gallery in San Francisco, which will start on October 6 and run through October 27, 2018. The gallery will be giving away exclusive art prints to the first 50 guests on opening night.
