Mattel Creates Barbie Doll to Honor Madam C.J. Walker, the First Self-Made Woman Millionaire

Madam C.J. Walker was a pioneer in many ways. She was America’s first documented self-made woman millionaire, cultivated the industry of modern Black haircare and cosmetics, and created the role of the 20th-century businesswoman. So, it's only fitting that Mattel added Walker to their Inspiring Women series alongside others like Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Keller, and Jane Goodall. Walker was born in 1867 as Sarah Breedlove on the plantation where her parents were formerly enslaved.

Photographer Gets Rare Glimpse of British Columbia’s Spirit Bears

Wildlife photographer Jenny Stevens first heard of the spirit bear—or Kermode bear—in 2013. But it wasn't until several years later that she would have a chance to photograph this rare animal. While most Kermode bears are black, there is a small subset of white bears that are known as spirit bears. Interestingly, this subspecies of the American black bear can only be found in a specific part of British Columbia, Canada.

Miss England Finalist Competes Makeup-Free Making Her the First in Pageant’s History

There's an assumption that beauty pageant contestants must wear a full face of makeup in order to compete. And while that’s certainly still the norm, one woman is embracing her natural looks and having great success doing it. Melisa Raouf, a 20-year-old politics student from London, is a Miss England finalist and the first person to compete makeup-free in the competition’s 94-year history.

Photographer Explores Icebergs and Village Life on Greenland’s Iconic Disko Bay

It has been three years since photographer Albert Dros last visited Greenland, but the passage of time hasn't changed the country's beauty. Dros just came back from a month in Disko Bay, where he photographed red sailboats amidst icebergs, as well as the surrounding countryside.
