Long Exposure Photos Capture the Motions of Kayakers and Canoers Through Light and Color

Ontario-based photographer Stephen Orlando turns the repetitive motions of kayakers, canoers, and swimmers into stunning displays of light painting, with woven strands of color representing the individual strokes of movement across time and space. To create these beautiful images, Orlando attaches customizable LED lights to his subjects, and then sets long exposure times to erase signs of human presence while capturing the gorgeous patterns of light and color cutting across the water.

“I'm fascinated with capturing motion through time and space into a single photograph,” the photographer writes on his website, Motion Exposure. “Using LED lights with custom color patterns and long exposure photography, I'm able to tell the story of movement. This technique reveals beautiful light trails created by paths of familiar objects.”
