Burning Man is always home to creative art installations that bring together the Black Rock Desert community over the course of the weeklong festival. And now, Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange of Danish architecture firm BIG are looking to make a statement at the 2018 Burning Man Festival with The ORB.
BIG, known for its innovative LEGO House and harbor baths in Copenhagen and Aarhus, is looking to reflect life at Burning Man with their mammoth mirrored sphere. With a nearly 84-foot diameter, The ORB will reflect life on the Playa and provide a beacon for Burners throughout the duration of the festival. “The ORB is a mirror for earth lovers—reflecting the passing daytime, evolving life, and other artworks beneath it—a new planet to sci-fi fans, a wayfinder for travelers or just a huge disco ball to those who love a good party,” the team writes on Indiegogo.
At night, the festival lights will create a colorful effect on The ORB, which reflects back the party atmosphere for participants to enjoy. It will also give an incredible perspective on the annual burning of the temple, a wooden structure that will be constructed by Mamou-Mani Architects for the I, Robot-themed 2018 festival.
Ingels and Lange have already funded most of the 30 tons of steel and 1,000 hours of welding required to sew together the structure. Currently, they are raising the last $50,000 needed to complete the installation via an Indiegogo campaign.
The ORB is a 1/500,000 scale of the Earth's surface that will tower over the 2018 Burning Man Festival.
