Vintage 1954 Photographs Reveal a Quirky Underwater Wedding

If you've ever wondered what a synchronized swimmer and underwater clown's wedding would look like, you're about to find out. In an unusual series of photos from 1954, this water-loving couple decided to say “I do” in an underwater ceremony filled with fish. To prepare for the momentous occasion, the bride held down her voluminous skirt with diving weights, while the groom keep his shirt stiff using wax cardboard. These two are clearly professionals.

The wedding guests were seated in an observation room that looks through a clear panel, into the pool. Here, they watched as husband and wife exchanged their vows (while a tube supplied them with oxygen, of course). Aside from the fact that these images display a rarely seen look at people from the 1950s, they also represent just how mesmerizing a unique wedding can be, no matter what time period you're in.
