The annual Academy Awards is always a star-studded event, and the celebrities that attend are often just as talked about as the honors given that night. The Vanity Fair Oscar Party is one legendary gathering where the elite of Hollywood gather to celebrate and mingle with other attendees. This year, the magazine outdid itself (yet again) by capturing the glitz and glamour of the event. In collaboration with Instagram, Vanity Fair set up a cozy portrait studio and once again had photographer Mark Seliger snap pictures of the impeccably-dressed stars.
The photography set doesn’t look like it’s in the midst of a party at all. It instead appears as an intimate, vintage-inspired office with rich wood tones and a shelf lined with leather-bound books. The invited celebrities strike their poses accordingly, but each in their own style. Some stare in the distance, looking lost in thought; others gaze directly into the camera with knowing smiles. And those that came with a date look lovingly at their plus-one.
A highlight of the 2018 Vanity Fair Oscar photos comes from a massive group picture featuring some of the most notable black luminaries in the business today, from actors Donald Glover and Lupita Nyongo to director Ava DuVernay. “There is space for everyone to be excellent, loved and supported and we are not waiting for a seat at the table,” actor Gabrielle Union said of the photo. “We are building our own tables, together.”
