Charming Comics Offer a Lighthearted Look at the Idiosyncrasies of Everyday Life

Wawawiwa Comics

Illustrator Andrés J. Colmenares has an obsession with writing jokes. In 2009, he turned this love of humor into Wawawiwa, a series of single-panel comics that reflect everyday life in a funny yet positive way. Working with his wife, Viviana Navas, the character-driven digital drawings anthropomorphize everything from animals to household items. The couple then uses their subjects' idiosyncrasies to make either an amusing observation about today’s world or highlight something humorous about their chosen character. Sometimes, they do both.

Some of the funniest comics have animals as the stars. One illustration that’s sure to make all pet owners chortle (or maybe groan) is an interaction between a cat and a dog. In it, the pup is holding a coffee cup on a tray while another of its mugs has spilled on the floor.  The cat asks, “Do you need help with that one?” The “helpful” cat then walks over and pushes the mug on the tray to the floor. This is, of course, the opposite of being helpful; but anyone who has seen a cat carelessly fling something off the edge of a kitchen counter will get this joke.

Wawawiwa has compiled their comics into a book called A Visual Hug. It is now available for preorder through their website.

Wawawiwa is a web comic that anthropomorphizes everything from household items to fruit to animals.
