New Layered Plexiglass Artworks by Yosman Botero

Bogota-based artist Yosman Botero creates three dimensional optical illusions using layers of plexiglass and a skilled painter's hand. Back in March, we saw a collection of work that Botero was preparing for the 2012 Shanghai Art Fair. Here, we feature some of his continuously impressive and magical optical illusion artwork.

In each piece, Botero builds a frameless box by stacking sheets of plexiglass together, and then forms illusions of depth in which the layers of his flat painted subjects float. Some of the figures are topped off with a head made out of spiraling swirls or floating bubbles, while other figures simply interact with the etched designs on the surrounding acrylic sheets. Relying on depth, shadows, and details, Botero paints figures who appear extremely realistic. As viewers, we can continue to appreciate the remarkable details of the artist's layered paintings and fine etchings.
