The ancient Japanese paper-folding art form, known as origami, is fused with modern sensory technology in this interactive light installation called Jelly Swarm. Vancouver-based Tangible Interaction has collaborated with origami expert Joseph Wu to conceive and produce the interactive display that features 94 paper-crafted jellyfish, which they refer to as “jellies.”
Each jelly is illuminated by an LED module and changes color based upon interaction. The idea behind the show is to mimic the vibrant response system of the jellyfish found in the British Columbia coast. As such, the jellies are programmed to reflect light and respond to disturbances caused by human interaction. The installation is currently on display at the Vancouver Aquarium until January 2, 2012 as part of the holiday program that is celebrating aquatic light entitled Luminescence.
