Tokyo-based artist Risa Fukui creates detailed portraits simply by cutting slices out of sheets of paper. For this series, entitled Life-Sized, the artist developed ten new large-scale works mounted on translucent panels. Fukui developed each piece with swirling, haphazard lines that overlap in what look like hand-drawn doodles. Up close, each piece is a messy pattern, but from a distance, the chaos reveals an orderly structure of facial features that emerge from each portrait.
The installation can be appreciated from multiple angles. The back view boasts a friendly collection of colorful designs while, from the front, an eerie aura emanates from the all-white, floating shapes. At any angle, viewers can see across the room and through the expressionless, suspended shapes and appreciate the cast of realistic shadows that extend across the floor.
